The Candid Frame #89 - Stephan Oberhoff


Stephan Oberhoff is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer and composer living in Los Angeles, CA. Initially, Stephan came to the US in 1991 to study Jazz at the prestiguous Grove School of Music in Van Nuys, California. The planned original 1-year period of musical sabbatical and break from cranking out commercials and documentary film scores, however, expanded into Stephan's -now 18 year- stay in L.A.

During the earlier segment of his career in Germany as a composer and producer of numerous TV commercials and documentary film scores, he became Co-recipient of several Commercial and Documentary Awards. New Year! New Podcast! New Format! Focus Ring is Back!

The Candid Frame Photography podcast is a member is The Photocast Network, a loose confederation of podcasts both in English, Spanish and German, all on the topic of photography. It's a great resource for some interesting and engaging shows on our favorite pastime.

We even have our own podcast, but the production of this had been pretty infrequent. So, now I've brought it back with a new format and a new idea.

Four photographers join the conversation with two of their own images to discuss a single topic. I think it will provide an opportunity to turn the conversation from equipment and software, to....wait for it...photographs. What a concept!

The first episode focus on "Shadow and Light" and brings together Jeff Curto (History of Photography & Lens Position), Chris Marquardt (Tips from the Top Floor), Martin Bailey and myself, Ibarionex Perello (The Candid Frame). If we get a good response to the show and format, I intend to continue producing the program once a month. Let me know what you think.

Happy New Year. I want to share an interview that I did with Dick Gordon of American Public Media's The Story, one of my favorite interview shows and a program from which I draw a lot inspiration. I share how my friendship with a counselor at the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood introduced me to photography and changed my life. My story is shared in the second half of the show.

The Candid Frame #87 - Jay Maisel


Jay Maisel is acknowledged as a master of natural-light color photography . With a photographic career beginning in mid 1950's, His non-technical approach and his exceptional images have inspired countless photographers. Born and raised in New York City, many of these classic images have helped define the beautify of the city in a distinctive and memorable way. Based on his principle, "Light, Gesture and Color" he brings a sensibility which allows him to produce amazingly beautiful and revitting images from the unpredictable city street. The Candid Frame #84 - Stephen Marc


Stephen Marc, Olympus Visionary photographer and art professor at Arizona State University’s Herberger College of Fine Arts, is recognized for his unique and powerful photographic montages that explore the African Diaspora. His images combine family snapshots, antique photographs and images from his own extensive body of photographic work. The dual themes of all his work are an attempt to tell both his personal story and the story of a culture.

Marc’s current project, Passage on the Underground Railroad, explores North America’s Underground Railroad, which moved escaped slaves to freedom. For over four years, he took more than 30,000 photographs of people and places in 21 states and Canada. The project culminated in a book and exhibition of Marc’s Underground Railroad artwork.
