The Candid Frame Live - Getting the Band Back Together
Recently, we held a special Google+ Hangout which brought together some of the original (OG) podcasters: Martin Bailey (Martin Bailey Photography Podcast), Jeff Curto (Camera Position and History of Photography), John Arnold (Photo Walkthrough), Chris Marquardt (Tips from the Top Floor) and Ibarionex Perello (The Candid Frame).
These early adopters of podcasting used to get together on an irregular basis for a podcast called The Focus Ring, in which we would talk about different topics revolving around photography. It is missed by may.

What is your name?
Rob Nunn. I’m 41 years old, I come from Gosport in the UK, and I’m a Retail Manager by trade.
When did you begin listening to The Candid Frame?
That’s a tricky question, I checked my blog and I recommended The Candid Frame in May 2009 to my readers, so probably some time before Episode 70. There have been so many inspirational episodes, I would argue that Ibarianex’s work has been vitally important in my development as a photographer. The Candid Frame, and the people on it, give you avenues to explore, artists to investigate and a good kick in the pants to just get on with it and take some photographs.
The Candid Frame #207 - Kevin McCollister
Kevin McCollister is a Los Angeles based photographer who has been sharing images on his blog East of West LA since 2006. In his blog and his book by the same title, he explores parts of the city of Angeles not frequently explored in film and television. His photographs of Los Angeles, reveal the mash-up up the past and the present with images that often reflect how buildings and spaces have been continually adapted with each generation of Angelenos, particularly immigrants. His night photographs reveal a Los Angeles which seems virtually abandoned upon nightfall, but which still reveal glimpses of the people and the communities that work and exist there during daylight hours.
Born in Ohio, McCollister worked as a deckhand on the Mississippi River for several years after which he lived in Cambridge, MA where he attended Harvard University Extension School. He has lived in Los Angeles longer than he has lived in any other city.

In this latest video on The Candid Frame YouTube Channel, I walk you through my editing of an image which I made while walking the dog after a brief rain. It was a garage that I've walked by hundreds of times before, but the rain and the light revealed it in a completely different way.
I use Adobe Lightroom 5 as well as Nik Viveza II and Color Efex Pro to effect a final result that reflects what drew me to this ordinary scene in my neighborhood. I do this by demonstrating not only what global adjustments I apply when using Lightroom, but how I use the select controls of the Nik plug-in to get the final result that I desired.

When did you begin listening to The Candid Frame?
I am a fairly new listener. I didn’t start till this year. And yes, I was living under a rock. I didn’t comprehend the power of Podcasts till this year. Happy to say this is one of my regulars now.
How long have you been shooting and what inspired your interest in photography?
I am approaching ten years of shooting. Which is unbelievable in some ways because it still feels so new to me. My grandmother is a real artist: oil painter, sketches, collages, print maker, and so forth. So needless to say, I was encouraged at a young age to tap into my creativity. But rendering wasn’t for me. Drawing was fun but most definitely never stuck. It wasn’t until a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico that photography became a source of intrigue. I also have to credit one of my first photography professors, after seeing my work, told me to research Lewis Baltz and New Topographics. After that, there was no going back. Been at it ever since.

We are working on the release of a new and revised app for the The Candid Frame. This new app will work on both the iOS and Android operating systems. We are hoping it will be released into the wild in the coming weeks.
Though we could offer the app for a price point of $2.99 or $1.99, we want to be able to provide the app for free to everyone. To do so and to keep our costs down we are asking for at least 24 listeners to make a one-time donation of $10 to pay for the additional monthly cost we would incur by offering the app at no cost to our listeners for the next two years.
If you and just 23 other listeners contribute to this effort, you will not only have a great alternative to download all our content to your smart device, but you will also help us to increase awareness of the show and the great content we provide on The Candid Frame. Should we receive more than the amount we are asking, those funds will go to offset the monthly cost of storage and bandwidth needed to deliver the show to you each week.
Take the time to click on the donate button below and help make this happen and to make TCF the best source for inspiration and information about photography on the web.
And please remember to add a short note explaining that you are donating funds specifically for the TCF app.

How long have you been shooting and what inspired your interest in photography? I’ve been seriously shooting for a little over 5 years now, before that I had been taking family shots. The Candid Frame Live - The Ethics of Photographing the Homeless
In our latest Google+ Hangout, we discuss the ethics, challenges and personal choices involved in making photographs of the homeless or less fortunate. The discussion revolves not how each photographer makes their own personal choices of what they will or will not shoot, as well as share stories about how these images should and can be used to benefit people that the world treats as invisible.
The Candid Frame Listener Profile - Dan Moore
What is your name?
Dan Moore
When did you begin listening to The Candid Frame?
Looking back through your archives, it must have been right around episode 100. I remember the Jay Dickman interview which was #102, so right about then.
How long have you been shooting and what inspired your interest in photography?
I was a graphic design major and 2D art minor in college, so I took all of the photography classes. My instructor was Jerry Dell, and I didn’t realize at the time that 15 years later I’d have his voice in my head telling me to capture “black blacks, white whites, and a lively range of grays,” but I do. I didn’t do much with it for a while after graduation, but on a 2002 trip to Arches National Park I fell in love with the Parks and photographing them.

Influenced by both fashion photographers and internet bloggers, New York native photographer Chloe Rice gives photojournalism a unique editorial feel.
But in addition to specific artists and authors, it is easy to see from her photos that she could acknowledge the entire world as her inspiration.
Chloe sees trees as “bird umbrellas” and rain clouds as “just parts of the sky that like to laugh until they cry”. In her mind cars all smile and “everything looks prettier with eyelashes". Luckily, Chloe has a series of cameras to capture all of this imagination that she sees.
Chloe’s photos both ask you to remain innovative and inspired, to infinity and beyond!
You can find out more about Chloe Rice and her work by visiting her website and blog.
Chloe Rice recommends the work of Todd Selby.

The Candid Frame #203 - James Carbon
James Carbone’s life is a study of cultures that’s expressed through his passion for photography. Carbone was born in Los Angeles, Calif. From an early age Carbone read through the books of great photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Mary Ellen Mark. “Seeing all those great images started my obsession with photography,” Carbone says.
For the past ten years Carbone has studied under Mary Ellen Mark, a world-renown documentary photographer. The two started working together at Rockport College in Maine and have continued at Pacific Center Northwest in Seattle and El Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo Center in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since 2000, he has documented the day-to-day life of the Lopez family, pepenadores (literally “sorters”) who struggle to survive by scavenging plastic bottles in a garbage dump. He is currently collecting the photos for an upcoming book.
His work continues with a chain of newspapers and magazines in Los Angeles and in the San Bernardino Counties. In every picture, Carbone uses composition to interpret reality and capture it in an image that resonates with his audience. “Every time I shoot I try to create an instant connection,” Carbone said. “I like to get close to people. When I’m right next to them, there’s a connection. They trust me, and that’s how I can build a really true image of their humanity.” You can find out more about James and his work by visiting his website.
